Chateau La Dominique of Saint Emilion and Chateau Petit Village of Pomerol Wine Tour

Exploring Chateau’s and wine tasting in France was on the top of our bucket list when we decided years ago that we were going to travel the world with our dog. Touring wineries is one of those places where we must leave the pup at home for an afternoon. Don’t leave France without doing a wine tour, it was my favorite experience we had while there.

A Grand Cru Classe in the heart of Saint Emilion, Chateau La Dominique produces incredible wines based predominately on Merlot grapes. The Chateau is located in the north west of Saint Emilion near the edge of Pomerol. It was interesting to be there because they had a brand new winery with architecture designed by celebrity architect Jean Nouvel (a pritzker prize-winner). When we first pulled up to the winery the first thing we noticed was the beautiful red metal plated wall reflecting the vineyard. Upon walking closer to the wall we noticed a hidden stairway leading up to the top of the wall. At the top was a terrace that caught me my complete surprise. We found glass red pebbles that resembled the open top of a fermenting vat of wine complete with incredible views of vineyards from Saint Emilion and Pomerol. After sitting down for a bit to take in the breathtaking views, with a few pictures, we headed back down stairs to start the tour of the wine cellars. After the tour we tasted two different wines. They were very good but I much preferred the wines we tasted from Chateau Gaudet (the best wines I have ever had).

Chateau Petit Village is situated in the heart of Pomerol. The winery was so beautiful and very welcoming for guests. Like Chateau La Dominique, they also produce predominately Merlot grapes. I used to love Cabernet’s until I discovered my love for Merlot’s in France. After our tour we were led to a lovely bright tasting room with many large windows that allowed for an amazing view of the vineyards. A place with a view I wouldn’t mind waking up to everyday. The wines were SO good! The flavors were outstanding and rich, yet the wine was very smooth and drinkable. I will not hesitate to pick up a bottle if I come across a Merlot in this region again.
